As COVID-19 vaccines become available, many hope that we will be one step closer to eradicating the pandemic. There are many questions about the vaccines like, how they work, whether they are safe, and when they will be available to everyone. While the details about the COVID-19 vaccine are rapidly changing, we have addressed some common questions and myths to help you and your family.

How does the COVID-19 vaccine work?

The approved COVID-19 vaccines are messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines. This is a new type of vaccine that uses mRNA to teach cells how to make a protein (called a spike protein) on the surface of the virus that causes COVID-19. This protein elicits an immune response that produces antibodies. These antibodies protect us when we are exposed to the virus. The Covid 19 vaccine is the first approved vaccine to use mRNA technology. However, the mRNA vaccine has been studied for decades. It has been tested to ensure safety.

COVID-19 Vaccine Myths & Facts

Myth: The COVID‑19 vaccine can alter my DNA. Fact: mRNA does not affect or alter a person’s DNA or genetic makeup in any way. The mRNA of the COVID-19 vaccine does not enter the cell nucleus, meaning that it cannot interact with DNA.

Is the COVID-19 vaccine safe?

Safety is a top priority for the COVID-19 vaccine. The COVID-19 vaccine has undergone rigorous clinical trials and approval to determine its safety and efficacy. Also, the benefits of the COVID-19 vaccine eliminate potential risks. The COVID-19 vaccine protects you and others from the potential risk of getting a COVID-19 infection. Experts closely inspect the safety of the vaccine. There have been few reports of an immediate allergic reaction to the vaccine, but these reactions are quite rare (~ 11 allergic reactions per 1 million dose). If other unexpected side effects are detected, vaccination recommendations will be updated to ensure safety.

COVID-19 Vaccine Myths & Facts
Myth: The COVID‑19 vaccine cannot be safe because it was developed so quickly.
Fact: Before being approved for use, manufacturers had to show data from large clinical trials to ensure that vaccines were safe and effective. The emergency nature of the pandemic demanded a quick response, but thorough safety standards were still needed and met.

What are the side effects of the COVID-19 vaccine?

A person may experience some side effects after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. These side effects are a common sign that the body is building immunity against the virus. Common side effects of the COVID-19 vaccine can include:
1. pain or soreness at the injection site.
2. Headache
3. Chills
4. Fever
5. Tiredness

Side effects may be more common after the second dose than the first. These side effects should disappear within a few days of immunization. You can seek medical advice about taking ibuprofen and acetaminophen to relieve pain and discomfort.
